Doré Skidmore Demonstrates Bas-Relief Carving at VAS Membership Meeting on April 10

Doré Skidmore demonstrated Momoyamabori, the Japanese art of carving intricate bas reliefs, to an enthusiastic audience at the Vienna Arts Society art center on April 10th.. She brought sample wood “blanks”, and the audience had the opportunity to try their hand at using small carving tools to feel how this gentle art form is created.

Doré was VAS’s Artist of the Year in 2019. She works in many media, from sculpture to watercolor and acrylic. The Town of Vienna Calendar 2025 features a number of her stunning scenes of Vienna. For two decades as the featured artist at Street Scene Galleries in New Orleans, Doré carved bas relief scenes that reflect her interest in the distinct architectural styles found throughout America. A numbered edition of woodgraphs© was created from her original carvings. Each piece was hand cast, stained and painted according to the artist’s proof. Her woodgraphs© are collected worldwide.

Doré studied stone carving under Constantine Seferlis, master carver at the Washington National Cathedral. One of her sculptures, a cherub carved from a 350 pound block of Indiana Limestone, perches on a quartz rock in the prayer garden of St. Mark Catholic Church in Vienna, Virginia.
