At our March 9 meeting, members and visitors were treated to an intriguing demonstration by Jan Ponder. Using the ancient craft of encaustic painting. Jan applies layer upon layer of melted wax to a surface which many times is of one of her photographs adhered to a hard board surface. The end result has a mysterious, textured look.
Encaustic is also known as hot was painting. It involves using heated bees wax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid paste is then applied to a surface, Jan used prepared wood. Some artists use canvas. Other materials can also be added in creating artistic composition. Jan uses her own photographs as she creates her artworks.
The meeting will took place March 9 at 10:30 AM at the VAS Art Center at 115 Pleasant Street, NW Vienna, VA 22180
All of our meetings and demonstrations are free and open to public.
